What Maluma said to J Balvin to get him to collab on ‘Que Pena’

Reggaeton artists Maluma and J Balvin have a lot in common. They both hail from Medellin, Colombia, are Latin Grammy winners, and American fans may have danced to a few of their hits in the clubs.

But despite their similarities, the pair was not able to collaborate on a song together — until now.

Maluma, 25, and Balvin, 34, released “Qué Pena,” which translates in English to “what a shame” or “how embarrassing,” on Friday.

An industry source told Page Six that for four years the singers couldn’t work together because of “their schedules and careers rising at the same time; they didn’t have time to connect or be in the same place.”

However, this past winter, the “Felices Los 4” singer finally put the collaboration plans in motion.

“Maluma visited Balvin at his home in NYC to discuss that it was time,” the insider told us. “Since then, planning started for the song to be created and a video started to get planned this summer.”

When it came time for the Latin music superstars to film the music video for their new single, they returned to the place where the collaboration was born: New York. Balvin selected the film crew and the director Collin Tiley.

“They filmed it in Cipriani Wall Street (in the main ballroom),” the industry source said. “Both wanted a grown, elegant and sexy scene to focus on the evolution of urban music in fashion.”

The insider shared that the Colombian crooner’s first joint single means a lot to them because of what it represents.

“They know this will mean so much to their country of Colombia, and show unity within the Reggaeton movement,” the source said. “Their collaboration is pivotal as they both globally represent the movement of Reggaeton that came out of Colombia.”
