Martin Scorsese has been in front of the cameras at a round of awards shows recently. But “The Irishman” director was back behind the lens at Café Carlyle Thursday night as he filmed legendary New York Dolls frontman David Johansen on the rock star’s 70th birthday.
The punk legend — who performs his cabaret show as his alter-ego Buster Poindexter — celebrated with a raft of pals including Ron Howard, Debbie Harry and Fran Lebovitz, onlookers reported. One guest said: “It was a riot.”
It’s not yet known what Scorsese plans to do with the footage — but it’s clear that Staten Island native Johansen’s life has been colorful enough to fill a documentary.
