Ewan McGregor and Chris Messina are both very attractive men and they play the two villains taking on Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and her kickass friends in the upcoming Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. As the internet and fans are wont to do, a call for McGregor's Black Mask and Messina's serial killer Victor Zsasz to be in a romantic-- or just sexual --relationship in the movie went up.

A few days ago, Variety asked the two actors if the fan wish was going to be a reality in the flick. McGregor and Messina fumbled and danced around answering in the affirmative while also giving enough of a "sure" to keep fans frothing:

Oh, wow! The first kinda-sorta gay villains in a DC superhero movie... ish! "And there's a real love of anarchy." OK, but what about a love of dick?

Maybe the actors cannot confirm it but know that it is true. Maybe it isn't true and this is some bs once again a la Marvel promises. I don't know. Black Mask and Zsasz aren't gay in the comics, as far as I can recall (I'm also super repulsed by Zsasz being played by someone as FOINE as Messina, but YMMV.)

What I do know is that Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) is a lesbian in the comics and I'm wondering if they'll touch on that in the flick. I also know that Harley is bisexual. Could those characters have some moments during the movie to represent LBGTQ characters as well? Maybe instead of lip service, we can get some characters that DC hopes to keep around longer (for franchise purposes) coming out as LBGTQ in a way that isn't cheap or related to buzz around the flick but to flesh out characters we get to see in more leading roles in the near future.

I suppose we will all need to wait until Birds of Prey opens on February 7 to see whether Black Mask and Zsasz are a couple and what other changes writers made to characters from the comic book page to the big screen. (And to see about that dick love.)
