DJ Khaled carries Kobe Bryant t-shirt at Grammys 2020

January 26, 2020

DJ Khaled is among the stars paying tribute to Kobe Bryant at the 2020 Grammys.

The “Higher” artist, who is nominated for that song — a collaboration that features Nipsey Hussle & John Legend — brought a t-shirt featuring Bryant, who was killed Sunday in a helicopter crash, to the show’s red carpet.

The shirt features an illustration based on a photo of Bryant with his No. 8 Los Angeles Lakers jersey, though the photo was taken at the 1996 NBA draft, when the star was just 17, hadn’t played a minute of pro ball, and had wound up on the Lakers after being traded from the Charlotte Hornets.

Khaled, whose planned Grammys performance is set to be a tribute to Hussle, announced on the red carpet that he would also be paying tribute to Bryant his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, who also died in the crash.

“The news is devastating,” Khaled added. “It’s hard even to … celebrate. But what we’re going to do is uplift the spirits and pay homage.”

Bryant was traveling in his private helicopter over Calabasas Sunday afternoon when a fire broke out on board, sending the chopper spiraling from the sky, according to TMZ. The crash occurred around 10 a.m. local time amid foggy conditions and the Sikorsky S-76 chopper sparked a brush fire on impact that hampered initial rescue efforts, according to The Los Angeles Times. All passengers aboard the craft, including Bryant, Gianna, college baseball coach John Altobelli, and six others, died.
