The New York Comedy Club cancelled a performance by comedian Ari Shaffir after the venue received a number of threats over his remarks about Kobe Bryant on Twitter, a report said.

Shaffir was scheduled to perform at the Kips Bay club on Tuesday, but threatening calls starting rolling in Sunday night after Shaffir’s tweet, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

“Kobe Bryant died 23 years too late today,” Shaffir wrote on Twitter after the NBA star died, along with eight others, in a helicopter crash in California.

“He got away with rape because all the Hollywood liberals who attack comedy enjoy rooting for the Lakers more than they dislike rape. Big ups to the hero who forgot to gas up his chopper. I hate the Lakers. What a great day,” he added.

Shaffir apologized for the remarks in an Instagram post on Tuesday, writing that he always jokes about celebrity deaths by writing awful things about them.

“Every time a beloved celebrity dies I post some horrible s–t about them,” he wrote.

“I’ve been doing it for years now. I like destroying gods. And right when a famous person dies they’re at their most worshipped. So as a response to all the outpouring of sympathy on social media, I post something vile. it’s just a joke. I don’t really hate any of the people,” he added.
