Drama ensues at Sundance dinner honoring chef Alice Waters

PARK CITY, Utah — A dinner honoring chef and activist Alice Waters nearly turned into a food fight when an attendee interrupted her speech, leaving many without words.

Waters, 75, was speaking about her edible education idea at ChefDance 2020 during the Sundance Film Festival on Friday when a woman, who attended the event with “13 Reasons Why” actor Ross Butler, blurted out, “I disagree.”

The unnamed woman’s interruption was intended to be a compliment, as she went on to explain that it was Waters’ efforts that effected change in public schools around the country, but the message failed to be received properly.

The nephew of ChefDance founder Mimi Kim, who was sitting with “Grey’s Anatomy” newcomer Alex Landi, ran over to Butler’s table and started chastising the woman for her comments. Butler, who was also there with co-star Justin Prentice, remained uncomfortably silent during the awkward exchange that left the room staring.

Eventually, someone came over to diffuse the situation. Waters finished her speech and returned to her seat to finish the four-course meal that was prepared by Chef Gabriela Cámara.

Waters was left seemingly unfazed by the ordeal, as she was seen in conversation with both Butler and Prentice. At one point, she wrapped her hands around the back of Prentice’s neck in an embrace before giving him a hug.

Later in the evening, Butler was spotted at Tao Park City likely trying to forget what happened earlier in the night.
