Noah Baumbach has addressed the similarities between his six-time Golden Globe-nominated film “Marriage Story” and his own life.

The film’s writer/director has been open about how certain parts of the film echo his marriage to now ex-wife and actress Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Baumbach recently explained that watching the film’s characters Nicole and Charlie try to work out their problems only to get into a crazy argument hit too close to home.

“It’s the only time that I’ve lost the required distance as a director,” he told Esquire in December 2019. “I’d have to walk around the block to clear my head. . . . It was exhausting.”

But Baumbach stands by the notion that his film examines both sides of the relationship equally.

“If anything, this movie only illustrates that to take sides at all is folly,” he recently told The Guardian. “When it begins, we’re with her: we’re in LA, where she grew up, with her mum and her sister. She’s telling her story. But then he turns up, and we drift into his.”

He continued, “I feel like the job of the last part of the movie is to say: it’s all true, and none of it’s true. These are just people trying their best. Her story is one of momentum, rebuilding and finding her voice, and his is a story of breaking down; it’s a kind of role reversal, because he’s a director and she’s an actor – not that I want to stereotype those roles. But I also think that her monologue and his song at opposite ends of the movie are mirror images of something: in a way, both of them find their voice.”

Baumbach and Leigh were married from 2005 to 2013 and share one child together, Rohmer Emmanuel.

Now, the movie maven is with fellow film director Greta Gerwig, recently opening up about how much they understand each other’s lives.

“You come home at 3 in the morning and you climb into bed and the other person’s half asleep — you feel…Wrecked and lonely and you don’t even know if you got [the best footage]…” he had told ET Canada. “The thing you want more than anything is for someone to just take care of you because shooting a movie is so much.”

Baumbach and Gerwig have been together since 2011 and welcomed a baby together in March 2019.
