The Oscar nominations were announced Monday and they were incredibly disappointing and enraging, especially for women. Jennifer Lopez gave a layered performance in Hustlers and she was snubbed in the supporting actress category. Lupita Nyong'o getting a lead actress nomination? Nope. What about Lulu Wang's emotional and nuanced The Farewell? Forget about it. It's disheartening. Greta Gerwig didn't even get a Best Director nod, even though Little Women was nominated for freakin' Best Picture. What world is this??

In fact, only one woman has ever won in the category of Best Director... but there have only been five nominees and that, in and of itself, is also disgusting and egregious. It's enough to make anyone's blood boil. Naturally, Florence Pugh, who was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role as Amy March in Little Women, was also angry about Gerwig's snub. Speaking with EW, Pugh had this to say about Gerwig being shut out of the Best Director category:

"It's incredibly upsetting. It's a shame that it's still a conversation. She's literally made a film about this. She made a film about women working and their relationship with money and their relationship with working in a man's world. That's literally what Little Women is about, so [this] only underlines how important it is -- because it's happening."

She makes great points and has every right to be angry. I know I am. And it is upsetting that films like Little Women and Hustlers, which both had themes of women living in a man's world while trying to make their own way, were left out of the conversation in a year where there were a lot of great films by and starring women being made. It's exhausting to continue having these annual conversations knowing that nothing will really change if the Academy doesn't get its sh*t together and, not to be a downer, but it's even harder to imagine that they ever will.
