Prince Harry and Prince William on Monday angrily denied that “bullying” was behind Harry and Meghan’s shocking split from the royal family.
“Despite clear denials, a false story ran in a UK newspaper today speculating about the relationship between The Duke of Sussex and The Duke of Cambridge,” the brothers said in a joint statement. “For brothers who care so deeply about the issues surrounding mental health, the use of inflammatory language in this way is offensive and potentially harmful.”
While the statement did not specify the report, it is believed to have been aimed at a Times of London story Monday that insisted Megxit was sparked by William’s “‘bullying’ attitude.”
Sources blamed an escalating feud between the once super-tight brothers, saying it started as soon as Harry introduced wife-to-be Meghan Markle to William and wife Kate Middleton, the report had claimed.
“Quite early on they decided, right, ‘We are going to tell these people their place and we are going to push them away,'” the source said of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Kate.
“If you are Meghan and Harry and you have had two years of constantly being told your place, constantly bullied as they would see it, constantly being told what you can’t do, Meghan has been thinking, ‘This is just nuts. Why would anyone put up with this?’”
The source insisted the Sussexes were still torn on making their bombshell announcement last Wednesday.
“I don’t think they want to turn their back on the family and this country, and definitely not the Queen. I think that would genuinely break Harry’s heart,” the source told the UK Times.
The report made clear that other sources — ones close to both couples — vehemently denied the claims.
“William is certainly not trying to force them out. We are trying to find answers here,” another royal source told the paper.
The report comes as the senior royals meet Monday at the Queen’s country retreat for a historic summit that could decide the future of the royal family. The Queen has made it clear that she wants the Sussexes’ future settled within days, not weeks, The Times said.
