Johnny Depp: Yanked Dior ad was made with ‘great respect’ for Native Americans

Johnny Depp defended his Christian Dior ad after it was yanked amid a fierce backlash accusing it of cultural appropriation — insisting it was “made with a great respect” for Native Americans.

Depp and Dior were accused of racial insensitivity for “We Are the Land,” an ad for the fragrance “Sauvage” with the actor playing the guitar while a co-star in Native American get-up danced around him.

“There was never — and how could there be or how would there be — any dishonorable [intent],” Depp told The Hollywood Reporter of the teaser that eventually got pulled.

“The film was made with a great respect for the indigenous people not just of North Amferica but all over the world.

“It’s a pity that people jumped the gun and made these objections. However, their objections are their objections,” he said, stressing that the full project “has never been seen.”

Depp said the creative team behind the ad, which was directed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino, would meet critics and those offended by it to resolve how to release the full project.

“I can assure you that no one has any reason to go out to try to exploit,” he told the trade mag, insisting the project was made with the help of the Comanche Nation and other indigenous groups.

“It was a film made out of great respect and with great respect and love for the Native American peoples to bring light to them. They haven’t had the greatest amount of help out of the United States government.

“The idea is as pure as it ever was, so we will come to an agreement so that everyone is happy.”
