Soccer star Sydney Leroux gets tattoo honoring Gianna Bryant

Pro soccer player Sydney Leroux is showing her love for Gianna Bryant with a new tattoo – a simple No. 2 in honor of the late 13-year-old basketball phenom.

Vanessa Bryant, 37, shared a photo early Monday of Leroux’s new ink to memorialize her daughter, Gianna, nearly a month after she and Kobe Bryant, 41, were killed along with seven others in a helicopter crash on Jan. 26 in Calabasas, California.

“Thank you for honoring my Gigi,” Bryant wrote in a caption alongside the image. “I love you @syndeyleroux.”

Leroux, 29, is a close family friend of the Bryants and also wears No. 2 as a forward for the Orlando Pride in the National Women’s Soccer League. She has previously thanked teh former NBA great for being one of her mentors and allowing her into his “beautiful family,” she wrote in late January.

“Gigi you were a star,” Leroux wrote on Jan. 27. “Your dad told me that you were going to be better than he was. You had the gift no matter what you were playing. I know you’ll be looking down on your mom and your sisters with your big smile while shooting hoops with your dad, doing what you both love. 2 will always be ours.”

Leroux’s tribute came after the NAACP Image Awards honored Kobe Bryant and his daughter late Saturday with a segment featuring the smiling pair on a darkened basketball court. Two oversize banners showing Bryant’s numbers that he wore while playing for the Los Angeles Lakers — 8 and 24 — were also shown during the memorial.

Audio from Bryant’s NBA farewell speech was played during the tribute, as well, before the event culminated with a picture of the NBA great embracing his daughter.

“Thank you guys for all your sacrifice,” Bryant said on video. “What can I say? Mamba out.”

A public memorial for the Lakers icon and eight other victims killed in the helicopter crash will be held Monday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
