Johnny Depp’s new film, “Minamata,” premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival this week — but its after-party apparently struck a sour note.

The film follows Depp as real-life Life magazine photographer W. Eugene Smith, who chronicled the tragedy in 1970s Japan involving an industrial plant poisoning a small town with mercury and an insidious coverup.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the celebration for the German debut of the film was “held in a gritty Berlin warehouse club called Arena” and was meant “to be a dance party, with strobe lights, a large dance floor and a DJ mixing tracks like ‘Jungle Boogie’ and ‘Push It.’ ” But amid the club vibe, “there also were giant images from the film projected on the wall … including several re-creations of Smith’s iconic photographs” such as one showing “a mother cradling her naked, deformed daughter.”

The disturbing imagery apparently kept the dance floor “deserted,” the report said, as guests opted to instead hang “in the club’s back rooms.”

The film was directed by Andrew Levitas.
