Manhattan DA Cy Vance celebrates Harvey Weinstein conviction

Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. delivered a statement Monday after his office secured a conviction against Harvey Weinstein in a case that will help define his career.

“These are the eight women who changed the course of history in the fight against sexual violence,” Vance said of Assistant DAs Joan Illuzzi-Orbon, Meghan Hast and the six accusers who testified against Weinstein.

“These are eight women who pulled our justice system into the 21st century by declaring that rape is rape, and sexual assault is sexual assault, no matter what.”

A seven-man, five-woman panel found Weinstein guilty of criminal sexual act for forcibly performing oral sex on former “Project Runway” production assistant Mimi Haleyi in 2006 and third-degree rape for an attack on Jessica Mann in 2013.

The jury acquitted Weinstein of the top two charges of predatory sexual assault involving “The Sopranos” actress Annabella Sciorra and first-degree rape for the attack on Mann.

“This is the new landscape of survivors of sexual assault in America. This is a new day,” Vance said.

“It’s a new day because Harvey Weinstein has finally been held accountable for crimes he committed. The women who came forward courageously, and at great risk, made that happen.”

Vance came under fire in 2015 after his office declined to prosecute Weinstein for groping an Italian model in his Tribeca office.

Ambra Gutierrez told police that Weinstein grabbed her breast, and investigators had her place a controlled call to Weinstein, which they secretly recorded. Although Weinstein admitted his misconduct then tried to lure her up to his hotel room, the DA said at the time there wasn’t enough evidence to charge him.

The decision ravaged Vance’s reputation, but Weinstein’s conviction may help repair what has been an uneven legacy.

Gutierrez showed up outside Manhattan Supreme Court Monday to celebrate the victory.

“I was jumping for joy,” Gutierrez told reporters. “This is really the outcome I was wishing for that failed in 2015.”
