How ‘Magicians’ worked Stella Maeve’s pregnancy into Season 5

Julia and Penny are having a baby!

Wednesday’s episode of the “The Magicians” reveals the highly-anticipated storyline following the real-life pregnancy of Stella Maeve, 30, who plays Julia Wicker on the show.

According to the “The Magicians” co-creator Sera Gamble, “As soon as we found out she was pregnant, this production machine kicked in.”

“It’s just one of those things about being a series regular on a show, if you’re a woman of childbearing age, at some point you might be pregnant, so it wasn’t a huge deal,” she recently told Page Six.

Gamble continued, “We wanted to make sure Stella was taken care of, that she was comfortable and that everything was safe and professional for her during her pregnancy. She is a really hardworking, ambitious actress. She really sinks her cheeks into stuff and we always want to give her juicy things, we just sometimes gave her juicy things that did not require stunt wire work during the pregnancy.”

Maeve — who welcomed a baby girl with fiancé, 20-year-old actor Benjamin Wadsworth, in January — found out she was pregnant two days after getting to Vancouver to film the fifth season of the Syfy show, which is adapted from the best-selling book trilogy by author Lev Grossman.

“I was holding off on telling anybody, just because everyone says until you’re out of the first trimester, it’s a risk and you just don’t know,” Maeve told us recently. “I waited until we were in the clear and then made the calls and everybody was super supportive.”

She added that they asked her if it was OK to write her pregnancy into the show.

“The way that it unfolds and the way that they have worked it into the show was really nice,” she said. “It’s a very cool way that they sort of built it in because they didn’t have to and I think it would have worked either way, but it’s interesting.”

Maeve and Wadsworth, who first met at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2018, welcomed Jo Jezebel on Jan. 29.

“She’s so freaking beautiful,” Maeve told Page Six at the time.

Maeve documented her growing baby bump on Instagram throughout her pregnancy, including a selfie with the accompanying caption, “Mama Maeve.”
