'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' to Explore the Origins of Finn & Co., but Not Rose

December 02, 2019

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker marks the end of an era. Naturally, that means we're bound to get a lot of answers to a lot of mysteries, including (maybe) more info about Rey's past, the weird Kylo Ren/Rey Force bond, and just what the hell is Emperor Palpatine's deal. But, aside from all the Rey stuff we're being promised, the news that Finn's origin story will also be explored (to a degree anyway) is exciting for multiple reasons.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams shared that Rey isn't the only one getting some backstory love. Finn (and Poe!) are too. Here's what he had to say about it:

I would say that each of the characters get more light shed on their histories. I'm not saying we get full, exhaustive downloads on all of their childhoods and every major step that got them to where they are. But there are a lot of questions about Finn's past, about Poe's past, obviously Rey and Kylo, and then some of the new characters we meet.

Yes! Love me some more Finn and his getting to learn more about him is long overdue. Now, as fantastic as that is because we all deserve more Finn in our lives -- and John Boyega needs something else to focus on after outing himself as the person who left the The Rise of Skywalker script behind (that's ok, John, we forgive you!) -- noticeably absent is all mention of Rose Tico. If you've been keeping count, the film has literally everyone covered, except for Rose, that is. Now, we know the loveable Rebel engineer has been promoted to a military Resistance commander, but all that really means is she won't be gallivanting across the galaxy alongside Rey, Finn, and Poe. On top of that, she's been absent from most, if not all, of the promotional materials for the film, making me side-eye all potential reasons for why she's been sidelined.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is in theaters December 20, 2019.
