President Trump’s decision to attend a Christmas Eve service at an evangelical church in West Palm Beach, Fla. — rather than his usual Episcopal church, Bethesda-by-the-Sea — was made on such short notice, sources said, that security was not as tight as usual.
Trump’s visits to Bethesda-by-the-Sea have customarily included metal detectors and “airport style” security lines. But sources told Page Six that there was no such setup this time at Family Church.
A source said the Secret Service did sweep it beforehand.
A rep for the church had no comment but pointed to a tweet from lead pastor Jimmy Scroggins, who greeted Trump and First Lady Melania Trump outside. “First time I’ve ever met them,” he wrote. “They were both extremely gracious, participated in the entire service, and stayed through the end. Always glad to make a big deal about Jesus!”
Sources familiar with Bethesda-by-the-Sea said some parishioners were happy to be clear of the hubbub of a presidential visit, but other members were disappointed because they’d expected Trump.
The church’s rector, Rev. James Harlan, told us: “At Bethesda, our doors are wide open for any and all to come experience the joy of Christmas and to find consolation and hope in the loving presence of God. And if not here, we hope everyone finds a worshipping community that will unleash the grace of God within.”
