Want To Hear Meghan Trainor Sing The 'Friends' Theme Tune? No? Well, Here It Is Anyway

October 04, 2019

Friends is experiencing a nostalgic resurgence right now in large part thanks to its popularity on Netflix with the younger generation of viewers who didn't grow up with it. That means everyone is rushing to cash in on the fad. Pottery Barn released a collection tying into an episode where Rachel got excited to buy lots of stuff there (for an episode that was already an excuse for product placement). Ikea recreated Monica's living room for ads. Suddenly every bloody clothes shop I go to in town has Friends t-shirts (and yet I have to go online to get Lucrecia Martel ones -- pure snobbery, I tells ya.) Now, the show is 25 years old because time makes fools of us all and of course someone has decided to cover the show's highly memorable theme tune. Admit it, you could sing The Rembrandts's I'll Be There For You right now without having to look up the lyrics.

So who covered the song? What hip and highly relevant artist did the honors?

Yeah, it was Meghan Trainor.

How does she make it sound like the Kidz Bop version of the theme tune without even trying? The original is hardly a hard-rocking number but this one feels positively soporific by comparison. I guess Jeremy Renner was too busy for this one. I'm curious as to who this song is for. Are the Gen Z kids who are now super into Friends also all about that bass? I'm not asking for Rammstein or anything here -- although that would be amazing -- but this isn't helping to win me over to the current hype train. Then again, I seem to be about a solid decade too old for that. F*cking hell. Can I at least get a cover of Tossed Salads and Scrambled Eggs by Billie Eilish now or something?
