The Drama League honored Sutton Foster at the Plaza. Its once luxe lobby now looks like a yard sale. And for whatever they unloaded that whole lot for, it still wouldn’t meet the cost of Sutton’s floor-length sequin gown.
September 2020, she’ll star opposite Hugh Jackman in “The Music Man” revival. She’s on TV’s “Younger,” which has been renewed for Season 7.
“I’m from small-town simple people. Dad, from North Carolina, is Bob. Mom, Helen, heard the name Sutton in a film and named me that.
“I did high school productions of ‘Grease,’ ‘Camelot.’ Who knew about Broadway or the Tonys? I went to check out tapes of stage shows.
“Naive, green, my first job, I struggled with nerves. Things were scary. My entrance in ‘Little Women,’ my skirt fell off to the floor. I stepped out of it and threw it over my arm. In ‘Anything Goes,’ my heart was racing. My hand shook so badly that liquid in my glass spilled over.
“I’m 44. I’ve worked all my life. I just want to enjoy what I do.”
Despite the regulation false eyelashes, makeup was simple. No nail polish.
“My screenwriter husband of five years and I have a 2-year-old daughter. Our home has elephant prints. It’s said if their trunks are forward at the front door, you’re safe.
“But there’s never enough time. TV’s a 14-hour day, and nothing matters unless the camera’s facing you. I have two dogs. I take naps. This morning at 7 a.m. I did a bake sale for our school. And when I’m really done in, it’s a sip of bourbon.”
Please pay attention
Here’s what’s happening: Kelly Ripa’s schlepping around in a giant-size huge pink feathery marabou-ish or whatever it is hat for Halloween. Having worn this identical Ivy Supersonic job in 2003, memorabilia op Gotta Have Rock and Roll auctions it next week.
Also, Mary Wilson, a Supreme, and Mark Bego’s book “Supreme Glamour,” about the Supremes’ fashions, gets pushed next month at the Cutting Room. Whoopi Goldberg wrote the foreword. Whoopi Goldberg — an authority on fashion?
Also, for some reason, Rupert Holmes will perform Rockers on Broadway Nov. 11 at Le Poisson Rouge.
I mean, pay attention. Who else would tell you these things?
Pol position
Already carving up New York next season: De Blasio for Gov., Brooklyn BP Eric Adams for mayor — and with a back-rubbing co-endorsement deal — Mrs. de Blasio for Brooklyn BP. Also Staten Island’s Dem congresscreature Max Rose is lining up. So’s Corey Johnson. So is the favorite of many people — Scott Stringer.
How this clan got schooled
Kendall and Kylie Jenner’s mother, Kris: “Classes clashed with their careers. School settings couldn’t fit their busy lifestyles. I’m grateful to Novel Education and NYC’s Chris Rim’s Command Education for their diplomas.
“Honorably helping students get into universities allowed my daughters to graduate and build a career at the same time.”
They’re so big-time educated, now they’ll probably stiff Kim and Kanye.
Pants are in
Skirts, no longer on females, now seem to be only on beds. Yesterday I counted 23 ladies. All in long pants. Only two wore dresses. What is going on with that?
I shortly expect to see gents with their untucked shirts over dirndls.
Broadway producer Jamie deRoy, trotting around in a silver-spangled designer blouse:
“Scared to snag it, I carefully worked the blouse on over my head then sat down — right on top of my glasses. The blouse I bought on discount. The glasses cost me $500 to replace.”
Only in New York, kids, only in New York.
