Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow-gänger speaks

October 28, 2019

After we reported that a Johnny Depp impersonator dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow nearly upstaged the real Johnny Depp at the opening of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., last week, the look-alike told us the behind-the-scenes story.

Miami-based artist Jorge Varona said of attending the starry event, where (real) celebs included Morgan Freeman and Sofía Vergara, “We just showed up … I had no idea [Depp] was going to be there. I was going to go with my fedora and I was like, ‘Let’s just go as Captain Jack.’ [Depp] was like 10 feet behind me. I didn’t meet him.”

We first reported on Varona’s act in 2016 when he pulled one over on guests at Art Miami, who thought he was Depp. “I just go out and it’s fun. I know I’m going to get a reaction. I don’t tell people I’m him, but I also don’t say I’m not. If I get asked for an autograph, I just scribble a little something,” Varona said.

“Sometimes I get called out because I don’t have the tats. I’m also a little taller — and I don’t have his fame or money.”
