Well, this was somewhat unexpected. After sliding to number two last week to make room for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Joker is back at the top of the domestic box office, having taken in an estimated $18.9 million over the $18.53 million of Maleficent 2. Seriously, this is impressive from a purely business point-of-view. It's inevitable that Joker will be one of the year's most profitable films thanks to its estimated $55-70 million budget too. A domestic gross of over $277 million -- over $100 million more than Hobbs and Shaw -- brings its worldwide numbers to close to $850 million. That makes it the seventh highest-grossing film of the year so far and the highest-grossing R-rated film ever (not adjusted for inflation.) It'll close in on $900 million easy but can it keep up the momentum to get to $1 billion? I'm hesitant to say yes because I'm not sure where that money would come from. The fact that it got to such grosses without a China release is impressive enough. Now, wait for all the 'sources' to start claiming Warner Bros. are trying to tie this movie into the upcoming RPattz Batman!

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is at number two and has made $65 million domestically so far. This won't be the hit the first one will be but it seems like it will at least break even. Still, Disney, do you have to spend so much cash on these things? $185 million isn't chump change!

In new releases news, Black and Blue took in around $8.3 million, beaten out by Countdown's $9 million. Not much was expected of either so this is solid business all round. The director's cut of The Current War slumped by with $2.7 million on over 1000 screens. Hey, at least it got a non-Weinstein release.

In expansion news, The Lighthouse moved into over 570 theaters and grossed just over $3 million, while Jojo Rabbit made over $1 million from 55 theaters. Parasite continues to do ridiculously good business as it passes the $4 million mark from only 33 theaters!

Kanye West's IMAX experience Jesus is King took on Bruce Springsteen's Western Stars and won, taking in $830,000 compared to the $560,000 of The Boss despite comparable theater numbers. Obviously IMAX inflated ticket costs helped but there was more of a sense of Event around Ye than Bruce. He does know how to get people to pay attention to him, alas.

This coming week sees the release of Terminator: Dark Fate, Edward Norton's Motherless Brooklyn, and Harriet Tubman biopc Harriet.
