Jerry Harris: Cheer Star Under Investigation for Soliciting a Minor
This week, federal authorities executed a search of the home of Jerry Harris, a beloved Netflix star.
They were there searching for evidence of child porn after receiving allegations that he solicited a minor for sex.
Cheer is a Netflix docuseries that began airing in January of 2020.
The 6-part series followed a nationally ranked college cheerleading team from Texas.
One of the stars is 21-year-old Jeremiah Harris, who is better known as Jerry Harris, who made an impression on viewers for his positive attitude.
Now, Jerry is being investigated by the FBI on the accusation that he allegedly solicited minors for sex.
FBI agents carried out a search warrent at his Illinois home on Monday, September 14.
Reports say that Jerry has not yet been charged with any crime.
Varsity is a private company and part of the cheerleading industry.
The company became aware of claims of "inappropriate sexual conduct" in August.
Varsity then reached out to authorities in Florida and Texas.
Apparently, Varsity shared two screenshots with police.
One of the screenshots was an alleged Snapchat image of Jerry's face.
Reportedly scrawled across the image was the text: "Would you ever want to ****."
On Monday evening, a spokesperson for Jerry Harris confirmed that Jerry was 19 at the time of the alleged solicitation.
Apparently, this went down in May 2019 -- nearly a year and a half ago.
By all accounts, the allegations against him do not involve any physical contact whatsoever.
According to Jerry's spokesperson: "We categorically dispute the claims made against Jerry Harris."
The statement emphasizes: "Which are alleged to have occurred when he was a teenager."
"We are confident that when the investigation is complete, the true facts will be revealed," Jerry's spokesperson concluded.
Federal law enforcement sources told TMZ that they are attempting to determine if Jerry is in possession of any images of minors.
Part of that probe also includes determining if he solicited any minors.
They confirmed to the tabloid that they spent hours at Jerry's home on Monday as they executed the search warrant.
We have to acknowledge that unknown details of this case make it extremely complicated to discuss.
A 19-year-old is legally an adult, no question about it. But how old was the recipient of the alleged Snapchat soliciation?
"Minor" is an ambiguous term that could apply to a 17-year-old, a 13-year-old, or anyone in between.
Different states have different laws regarding consent, so even though a 17-year-old and 19-year-old might be friends, former classmates, and peers, it might be illegal for them to have sex.
That is certainly the case in Florida, where the age of consent is 18. In Texas, the age of consent is 17. (You're welcome for sacrificing my search history to look that up)
Regardless, however, even in states where people may be of legal age to consent to intercourse, sexual photos and videos of minors are always illegal.
It may be confusing to tell a high school couple that they're allowed to hook up with each other but not allowed to send pics back and forth, but sometimes fighting child porn means going to legislative extremes.
But we do not yet know the details of the allegations against Jerry. Public perception and the legal outcome willl likely hinge upon the age of the person or persons whom he allegedly solicited.
We could be looking at anything from someone who is now an adult but was 17 at the time and simply has controlling parents ... or at a vulnerable minor who was being groomed for sex. We do not know the details.
