New Red-Band Trailer For The DC Universe 'Harley Quinn' Animated Series Is A Disappointment

November 12, 2019

I was initially excited when streaming service DC Universe announced an animated Harley Quinn series. I quite adore the demented Dr. Harleen Quinlan and enjoy the attention the character is receiving in movies and television at the moment.

I was less stoked about Kaley Cuoco voicing Harley, as she dismally fails to capture the essence of the character somehow. Lake Bell joins her as Poison Ivy and Alan Tudyk as The Joker, as well as characters voiced by Jason Alexander, Diedrich Bader, Giancarlo Esposito, Ron Funches, Tony Hale, Chris Meloni, Natalie Morales, Jim Rash, JB Smoove, and Wanda Sykes. It sounds like it should be amazing, but this new NSFW trailer does not impress me.

Maybe it's Cuoco's voice (it is) or perhaps the fact that they have Harley walking with a tiger on a leash instead of a hyena (I just really love Bud and Lou, okay?). Perhaps it's the chasing after The Joker and his status among criminals that rubs me the wrong way, tossing Harley back into an obsession with him even after leaving him behind. DROP HIS ASS, GIRL. Do YOUR thing.

I do know that the jokes aren't funny and the ability to have lots of cussing seems to have prompted writers to add them in by the handful. I love cussing as much as the next person, but there is an art to it. Just dropping f**king into a sentence three times isn't it, kids. Finesse that sh*t, dummies.

Harley Quinn is expected to premiere on DC Universe on November 26, 2019, with 26 30-minute episodes. At that time, I'll render my judgment on at least the first episode of the series.
