Michael Fisham is opening up for the first time about the death of his adopted son, Larry, due to an accidental drug overdose.
“The Conners” star shared on the “Tamron Hall Show” on Wednesday that his late son did not “struggle” with substance abuse for a long period of time, but rather was something he tried “over time” with fatal effects.
“He moved to a house in transition after living with his sister for a little while, and he tried drugs that turned out to be bad drugs that multiple people had a very serious reaction,” Fishman, 39, said.
The actor adopted Larry and his older sister, Camille, as they were aging out of the foster care system. He said Camille told him, “I’ve never had a dad. Will you be my dad?”
Fishman warned the kids that having a parent would come along with a new set of rules. He said he wished he mad more time to make a bigger difference in Larry’s life.
“In my case, I feel like I came to Larry maybe later than I wish I could,” he said. “And I think, for parents, you wish you had more time. You don’t always get the time that you want.”
Larry died in June.
Fishman said he was hesitant to share his story, but hopes it can help other families who may be struggling with similar issues.
He said, “If one other person can relate, if it can help you talk to your kids in some way, if it opens up a dialogue where you just listen, because I think the trauma that lies underneath … the really important part is that you’re brave enough to admit when you struggle and that you need help or that you aren’t strong.”
The former “Roseanne” star also has two biological children with his ex-wife, Jennifer Fishman, whom he split from in December 2018 after 19 years of marriage. They share 17-year-old Isabella and 20-year-old Aaron.
Fishman said he is now helping his kids grieve and trying to “model positive behavior.”
In September, Fishman shared a photo of his two adopted children and wrote, “Always in my heart.”
