You're going to have to wait a bit longer for Christopher Nolan's much-anticipated Tenet. Warner Bros. has pushed the $200 million movie back once more, aiming to open in a time where movie-lovers can confidently return to theaters. Now, Tenet will open on August 12.
For months, studios have been dramatically changing their release schedules. The James Bond movie No Time To Die moved from April to November. Fast and Furious 9 leapt from April 2020 to April 2021. Black Widow left May 29 for November 6. Wonder Woman 1984 went from June 5 to August 14, and then to October 2. Other movies, like Lovebirds, Scoobs, Trolls World Tour, and The King of Staten Island switched strategies, skipping theaters altogether to go straight to digital and streaming. While still others, like The Personal History of David Copperfield, The Woman in the Window, and The Green Knight were delayed indefinitely.
Amid much of these moves, Tenet held firm on July 17. It wasn't until mid-June that Warner Bros. pushed it to July 31. Now, they're pushing another couple of weeks, with industry watchers wondering if that'll be enough time for theater-goer confidence to return. In the meantime, Tenet's move has many pondering what other July theatrical releases might bounce. Mulan could be next.
The Disney live-action re-imagination of the 1998 animated musical has already moved once, from March 27 to July 24. With the pandemic have a resurgence across the US and China, some are predicting it'll be pushed to August if not later. The other option is to drop the title straight to Disney+ as they did Artemis Fowl. However, that seems incredibly unlikely considering the box office drawing power of past live-action remakes, like Maleficent, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin.
