It sure is a banner year for Resident Evil. A successful remake of Resident Evil 2, the franchise seemingly heading to television, and Resident Evil 4 set to debut on every last console in existence (never a bad thing), now Capcom tells us that the game series has sold in excess of 90 million units worldwide since it began back in 1996.

That makes it Capcom’s best-selling series in history (as of today, February 26), and Resident Evil 5 is still the best-selling entry in the series. The previous series figures were 86 million last year, so safe to say Resident Evil 2 has already contributed a healthy amount to the pool having been previously reported as selling more than 3 million units already.

It’s not hard to imagine that the upcoming Switch ports of Resident Evil Remake, Zero, and 4 could well tip that total closer to the magic 100 million mark, and if we’re lucky, a new Resi may just be along soon enough to push it over the line.

As you’ve probably noticed, Resident Evil is perhaps the most popular horror game series ever, and despite stumbling here and there (I’m looking at you three skulking in the corner, Operation Racoon City, Umbrella Corps, and Resident Evil 6) it’s managed to refresh itself repeatedly and remain relevant while the likes of Alone in the Dark, Clock Tower, Dead Space, and Silent Hill have sadly faded away.
