‘Little Monsters’ Director On Turning Lupita Nyong’o into a Badass Heroine for Today’s Kids [Interview]

February 05, 2019

Little Monsters (read our review) conquered Sundance, winning audience raves and a distribution deal with Neon and Hulu. Now the film’s writer/director Abe Forsythe has his sights on another goal: he wants people dressing up as the film’s main character for Halloween.

Lupita Nyong’o stars in the horror-comedy as a kick-ass kindergarten teacher, Miss Caroline. She fights zombies to save her kindergarten class on a field trip.

“I was thinking about what’s the Halloween costume for this in the future, which is the beautiful yellow dress, ukulele, fanny pack and just covered in blood,” Forsythe told us.

The costumes are so important in adding to the physicality of their characters as well. Miss Caroline obviously represents the good. Lupita is the sun and the kids, all in blue, are the sky,” he explained the wardrobe choices. (Yellow, well, it also just looks damn good splattered in blood.)

Forsythe continued, digging into his main character a bit more, “From day one, when I was pitching this movie, when I was pitching this character, when we were meeting people over here about trying to get the money, I always said the way James Cameron has used feminine action heroes in his movies, like his version of Ripley and Sarah Connor… I wanted it to feel like it could be a version of that for young kids growing up now.”

Nygong’o certainly nails both parts of Miss Caroline: the comforting kindergarten teacher and the tough survivor against whom zombies don’t stand a chance.

At a certain point in the movie, when Miss Caroline really starts taking charge as well, she’s taking charge of the environment and really protecting those kids,” Forsythe said. “For the audience, this is what’s been the most amazing thing about screening the movie over here, feeling like she’s actually saying to the audience, ‘No, I’ve fucking got this now and I’m not going to let this behavior go on anymore.’ The way that they responded to the character, but also everything Lupita brings to the character which is why I wanted her for this role in the first place.”

It really feels like she’s teaching us all in the audience the right way of doing things.”

Look for Little Monsters from Neon and Hulu later this year.
