‘Escape Room’ Set to Top $100 Million at the Box Office; ‘Glass’ Surpassing $200 Million

February 04, 2019

Columbia Pictures’ Saw/Final Destination-esque Escape Room (read the review) continues to exceed expectations at the box office and it’s set to top $100 million globally this coming week. Even after its strong opening weekend, a $50mm total would have been considered a success on the modest $9mm reported budget. While Escape Room is no Glass or Halloween, this is a huge hit for a smaller release and there’s no reason to think that a sequel to the Adam Robitel-directed thriller isn’t already in the works.

The film is about six strangers who find themselves in circumstances beyond their control and must use their wits to survive. Logan Miller from Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, Deborah Ann Woll from “True Blood” and Mother’s Day, and even Tucker and Dale vs. Evil’Tyler Labine star.

In other genre box office news, M. Night Shyamalan‘s Glass (read our review) should be topping $200 million worldwide by the end of the day. Its predecessor, Split, opened similarly and topped $275M in its full run. As I wrote previously, if Universal had their way, another sequel would be on the horizon, although Shyamalan owns the rights and had publicly stated that this will probably be the end to the trilogy.
