YouTube star Tré Melvin has been hospitalized with a brain injury after getting into a “severe” car accident, his team said this week.
A statement published on Melvin’s Twitter account announced that the 26-year-old and his friend Katherya were both injured in the crash on Monday.
“Early Monday morning, Tré was involved in a severe auto collision with his friend Katherya. Both are currently hospitalized and have suffered brain injuries. While Tré is stable, Kathy is unresponsive,” reads the statement, which was posted Tuesday.
“Their families ask that you please send prayers, blessings, and positive vibrations their way,” the statement continues. “They will come out of this stronger and more powerful. So it is.”
The news comes less than a month after Melvin said he was departing YouTube over claims the platform was censoring his work. He’d decided to launch a new project, Tré Melvin TV.
“i will no longer allow the platform to censor my pain. i will no longer allow the platform to demonetize my pain,” he tweeted. “i will no longer sit at a table both my blackness and my queerness have never truly been welcome at. i will build my own.”
