Recap: Where the Hell Is Michonne on 'The Walking Dead'?

March 02, 2020

Previously on The Walking Dead: Daryl, Carol, Aaron, Connie, Kelly, Jerry, and Magna are still trapped in the cave with Alpha's horde of Walkers and trying desperately to find a way out. They're successful in doing so, but an explosion caused by some dynamite in the cave results in everyone else escaping except Connie and Magna. Negan shares his suspicions with Alpha that Gamma might be spying on her on behalf of their enemies, and Alpha rewards him by having sex with him in the woods.

THE STORY SO FAR: Gamma/Mary surrenders herself to Gabriel, Rosita, etc. to let them know that Daryl, Carol, Aaron, and the others are in grave danger. Daryl crosses paths with Alpha and a small group of Whisperers and ends up badly injured as a result of taking them on by himself. Beta, on Alpha's orders, goes after Gamma/Mary to bring her back to their camp to be punished for betraying them.

WHAT'S GOOD ABOUT THIS EPISODE?: Gamma admitting to Rosita and Gabriel the truth about what she did to her sister and why she did it. Beta infiltrating the camp through Dante's grave and going from house to house, slaughtering everyone he finds, Michael Myers-style. Gamma/Mary confronting Beta and making it clear that she's not scared of him (whether she's telling the truth or not, she does a very convincing job of saying this to his face) while he also makes it clear that no matter what happens, she's not going to be alive for much longer. Alpha's conversation with Lydia, as Alpha tries to convince her to kill her and take her place as leader of the Whisperers, and Lydia rejects that decision and tells her that there are other ways to survive and stay alive than just the way she chooses to do so. Alpha's tearful fondness for Groucho Marx's song "Lydia The Tattooed Lady," which was a song that was also appreciated by another merciless sociopath with skewed feelings towards a dark-haired woman named Lydia. (SPOILER ALERT for the seven-year-old series finale of Breaking Bad, as that link contains a scene from that very episode)

WHAT'S NOT SO GOOD ABOUT THIS EPISODE?: Beta infiltrating the camp through Dante's grave or anyone else's grave, which seems to be a brand-new skill set that the Whisperers now have and are putting to good use, even though it makes no sense and is something that (as far as I know, and if I'm wrong, I'm sure that Dustin or one of the commenters will not hesitate to correct me and let me know) has never been done by any of the Whisperers since they first appeared on this show (Publisher's note: Accurate). It makes about as much sense as Negan and the Saviors covering their blades and arrows in Walker blood to infect everyone, even though Season 2 made it very clear that anyone and everyone will turn into a Walker when they die, whether they've been bitten or not.

And all I can do is shrug and shake my head at Daryl for shooting his crossbow first at some random Whisperer instead of at Alpha when he was ambushing them. So I'm going to do exactly that.

Rosita and Gabriel's relationship -- much like chocolate-flavored French fries (which I'm pretty sure is a real thing that actually happened back in the day when cocaine was guiding the business decisions of so many people) --still has no chemistry and its existence makes little to no sense.

IS NEGAN IN THIS EPISODE?: No.

MICHONNE?: No.

ISN'T THIS SUPPOSED TO BE THE FINAL SEASON THAT WE SEE MICHONNE?: Yes, it is.

AND WE HAVEN'T SEEN HER AT ALL SINCE THE MID-SEASON FINALE LAST YEAR?: No, we haven't.

AND THE PREVIEW FOR NEXT WEEK'S EPISODE DOESN'T LOOK LIKE IT WILL BE FOCUSING ON MICHONNE EITHER, CORRECT?: Doesn't look that way, no.

UH...HUH! AND THERE ARE SIX EPISODES LEFT IN THE REST OF THE SEASON, RIGHT?: Yes, that's correct.

......WELL, ALL RIGHT THEN. JUST WANTED TO CLEAR THAT UP: Which is totally understandable.

CARL?: Nope. Still dead.

JUDITH?: Yes, as she makes friendly conversation with Gamma/Mary and then comes to her aid when she's running from Beta.

CAROL?: No.

RICK?: No. Whereabouts remain unknown.

JADIS/ANNE?: Same response as above.

MAGGIE?: No.

IS DARYL STILL ALIVE? BECAUSE IF NOT, THEN WE'LL PROBABLY RIOT IF WE HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO: Yes, despite him going toe-to-toe against Alpha and the Whisperers and much of the blood he lost as a result, he's still alive, mostly thanks to Lydia.

DOES THE BLACK HELICOPTER MAKE AN APPEARANCE?: No.

ARE THE WHISPERERS IN THIS EPISODE?: Yes, they are.

TO SUM IT ALL UP: Despite the nonsensical plot decisions that make an appearance in this episode, it was still better than last week's episode and contained much of the forward momentum that was previously missing. And if the show could remember that some of us want to know what the hell Michonne is up to right now, it would be much appreciated.
