Teen Jailed For Rape Is Freed After His Brother Discovers Text Messages Proving He’s Innocent

January 31, 2018

In the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, more people than ever before are coming forward to admit that they have been victims of sexual assault. While the vast majority of these cases are genuine, very occasionally innocent people are wrongfully accused.

In fact, if it hadn’t been for a series of text messages being unearthed, 19-year-old Connor Fitzgerald could have spent years behind bars.

The breakdown of a relationship is a difficult thing to deal with, and, unfortunately, we live in a culture where being a “crazy ex-girlfriend” has been glorified on social media – with countless memes and GIFs encouraging this unacceptable behavior.

Conor’s ordeal began on November 1, 2017, when a group of officers arrived at his home in South London accusing him of raping a woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons. He was subsequently arrested in front of his horrified mother and sister.

According to Conor’s accuser, the incident took place in June 2017 after a drunken night out.

However, it wasn’t until last week that the 19-year-old’s case was dropped by Croydon Crown Court after a series of damning text messages came to light – in which, Conor’s accuser jokes about “ruining” his life. Until this point, the teenager was forced to spend three months in custody.
