It doesn’t take much to influence a child to do something, which is the reason why young children are taught from a young age not to talk to strangers. Children are easily coerced into compromising positions due to their naivety and desperate desire to impress their peers, something which has intensified with the introduction of social media.

Now children have access to a various social media platforms where they can be encouraged to partake in some potentially life-altering challenges. Keen to try and become ‘internet famous’ and gain a huge following online, children and teens are now prepared to try anything for notoriety. So it shouldn’t have been any surprise when the ‘Tide POD challenge’ went viral.

After all, it was only six years ago that people around the world were choking on cinnamon as part of the popular ‘cinnamon challenge’. The spicy stunt may have seemed harmless, but it came with some serious health warnings, with the American poison control centers receiving over 100 calls within the first three months of the challenges in 2012.

Of course, extreme eating challenges aren’t new. Milk chugging, the saltine cracker challenge and the chubby bunny challenge have all taken social media by storm in the past. But the difference is that these versions are relatively safe.

Meanwhile, the Tide POD challenge is incredibly dangerous. This shouldn’t come as a huge surprise given that laundry detergent consists of some pretty toxic substances, which is why household products are protected by tight seals to stop them being easily accessible to children, animals and those with mental deficiencies.
