Rupaul has had it with being scrutinized on social media, we’re told.
The “Drag Race” host, who uses the pronouns he and she interchangeably, sent followers into a frenzy last month when his Instagram posts began mysteriously disappearing from the app. Many assumed the drag icon’s account was hacked, but Page Six has learned he deleted posts because he wants to “disengage” and is laying low during a fraught period online.
“The truth is things like Black Lives Matter is overwhelming for someone like Ru. He gets backlash for appearing to not … support the community and [he receives] a lot of negativity, so he disengages,” a source said.
Another source confirmed he’s lying low, but said that it has nothing to do with pressures of BLM. RuPaul has come under fire for a lack of diversity on “Drag Race.” He’d responded to the controversy by saying: “First of all, the host of our show is black, gay, and a drag queen … we’re pretty diverse. Yes, there are lots of different types of people here.”
Meanwhile, behind the scenes, sources have described him as being disinterested in the contestants. “He should be called ‘Rude Paul.’ She hates drag queens and is extremely rude to them. You’re not allowed to talk to him unless told to. You can’t call him, ‘Hey gurl.’ No one can call him, ‘Mama Ru.’ None of that. He is not your friend. You cannot make small talk,” the first source said.
A source close to production told us there’s no truth to Ru being rude and hating the queens. A rep did not comment.
