Having only secured 2 percent of the Black vote in South Carolina, Pete Buttigieg recognizes that his campaign no longer has any path to victory, with the moderate wing of the party seemingly rallying behind Joe Biden (although, we'll see how Bloomberg fares on Tuesday). With that, Buttigieg has dropped out of the race.

I'll give him this: A year ago, no one outside of Indiana had ever heard of Buttigieg. He combined intelligence, a knowledge of foreign languages, and a certain level of smarm to rise in the Democratic field. After he announced, I had been completely won over, so much so that I ordered a Buttigieg shirt. By the time it arrived three weeks later, however, I no longer wanted to wear it. Buttigieg seemed to sell out his progressive ideas early on to the moderate wing of the party, and he seemed more interested in appealing to just the right demographic than he was in actually affecting change. He was Obama without any of the beliefs or convictions.

He'll make a great cabinet secretary though, and since he's unlikely to advance in a statewide race in Indiana, it's probably the best place for him. Congratulations on a great campaign, Mayor Pete. Goodbye.
