Universal has been trying to make a reboot of its iconic Golden Age Hollywood monster series happen for decades. Remember that Wolfman movie with Benicio Del Toro? Or the Dracula with Frank Langella? How about Tom Cruise's The Mummy? Ah, precious memories. Now, it seems like they made have finally pulled it off, with a little help from Blumhouse, of course. The Invisible Man, starring Elisabeth Moss, made a cool $29 million this weekend, instantly sending it soaring to the top of the box office. Well done, guys, your movie made back over four times its budget in a few days. Hopefully, this will inspire some smarter horror reboot decisions than that time Tom Cruise thought he could be better than Brendan Fraser? We remember.

Sonic the Hedgehog dropped to number two with a $16 million weekend, bringing its domestic total to just over $128 million. Paramount will be feeling relieved about that. Disney/20th Century [Fox], on the other hand, will be less than thrilled with the results for The Call of the Wild. That $45.8 million domestic gross from two weeks will sting, given the hefty budget. The studio looks set to lose about $50 million from this project. Way to make Harrison Ford grouchier.

A surprise breakthrough this weekend is My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising, which brought in $5.1 million from 1,260 theaters. Wide releases for anime aren't common but they do tend to pay off well when the distributors play their cards right.

In limited release news: Benh Zeitlin's long-awaited follow-up to Beasts of the Southern Wild was essentially dumped by [Fox] Searchlight, where it made a paltry $30k from four theaters. Wendy went through years of post-production issues and landed with a thud with critics, so the chances are it will fade into obscurity pretty quickly. Still, it made more money than Michael Winterbottom's satire Greed, which grossed $28,496 from the same number of theaters. Saint Francis took in $16.150 from one theater.

This coming week sees the wide expansion of Emma, plus the releases of First Cow, Run This Town, The Way Back, and Onward.
