Outgoing NY1 producer blames brass for mass talent exodus

March 02, 2020

NY1 staffers are fleeing in the wake of the bombshell discrimination suit filed last year by five veteran female journalists that continues to divide the ranks, we hear. The latest producer to leave said in a heartfelt farewell to colleagues Friday, “People feel battered, diminished and underappreciated” — but the channel’s attitude is, “If you aren’t willing to get in line, get out.”

Associate producer Sam Watkins, who was on the job for a little over a year, praised colleagues including Roma Torre, Kristen Shaughnessy and Rocco Vertuccio as “incredible mentors.”

But while “we have a ton of incredibly talented people here,” he said, “it also amazes me to see the lengths people will go to keep that talent suppressed. It’s no secret that there’s been a spike in people deciding to leave lately … Nobody has asked us producers to leave, but many of us have been made to feel unwelcome.” Sources told us four more producers left in the past two weeks, and talent including Grace Rauh, Stacy-Ann Gooden, Matt McClure and Alyse Zwick left last fall. We also heard that reporter Adelle Caballero suddenly quit, then penned a furious e-mail suggesting NY1 was “dishonest” about her reasons for walking.

Watkins wrote: “People feel battered, diminished and underappreciated . . . The concerns have been communicated, and instead of changes being made, people are retaliated against for having the audacity to want improvement.” He said he tried to bring his concerns to his bosses, but was ignored. “I love this station,” he wrote. “I’m hoping that these concerns are actually considered, instead of just dismissed and chalked up to me being labeled a ‘disgruntled producer.’ ” Torre and Shaughnessy are among the five anchors suing the channel.

A network spokesperson commented: “There has been no increase in departures for a newsroom of our size. We were disappointed to hear of this employee’s perceived issues through an exit e-mail and disagree with his assessment. We are committed to a strong and positive community in our newsroom.”
