Harry Belafonte celebrates 93rd birthday at the Apollo

March 02, 2020

Harry Belafonte celebrated his 93rd birthday with a star-studded bash at the Apollo Theater on Sunday.

Common, Sheila E. and Doug E. Fresh performed at the event, which doubled as a fund-raiser for the activist’s namesake branch of the New York Public Library and the Popular Democracy Movement Center.

City Winery founder Michael Dorf hosted the evening. Maxwell was scheduled to hit the stage, but canceled due to the flu. Usher even showed up as a guest to fête the “Day-O” singer.

“Mr. B. was very happy, sitting in the third row,” a source told us. “Everyone stood up and gave him a standing ovation. He felt the love.”
