Are We Ready for Pete Davidson, Movie Star?

May 08, 2020

It's been a helluva year and a half for Pete Davidson, who has broken up with Ariana Grande, wrote a not-great stand-up special about it, dated Kate Beckinsale and Cindy Crawford's daughter, starred in a pretty great movie that did well at Sundance and then on Hulu called Big Time Adolescence. He got into it with a Congressman, and some of his own cast members, and he even called out Louis C.K., who once tried to get Davidson fired from SNL.

King of Staten Island, however, feels like the culmination of Pete Davidson's young career, and maybe/probably the peak of it? I mean: It's hard to top a movie co-written and directed by Judd Apatow, and there are only so many times Pete Davidson can play himself. The loosely autobiographical King of Staten Island is Pete Davidson run through the Apatow filter. Lots of comedy, a huge heart, and an excellent supporting cast, particularly Marisa Tomei as Davidson's mother and former firefighter Steve Buscemi as a firefighter friend of Davidson's late father.

However, in the movie, it looks like instead of embarking on a comedy career and SNL as a means to escape, this Pete Davidson is contemplating following in his old man's footsteps and becoming a firefighter. Also, the Wallflowers song is so good. I'M SORRY!

King of Staten Island debuts on VOD on June 12th.
