American Ballet Theatre offers cruise ship bookings in CV relief auction

You can’t make this ship up.

The American Ballet Theatre has thoughtfully planned an auction to help with COVID-19 relief. Less thoughtful: Some available lots include bookings for a cruise.

Of course, cruise ships were reported as an early spreader of the virus, and at one point in March the largest outbreak of the coronavirus outside of China was aboard the Diamond Princess, a British ship with more than 700 cases and 13 dead. Many ships were stranded at sea because nations refused to let them dock, fearing that their passengers would infect residents.

Needless to say, the offer has been met with — slightly queasy — astonishment by ballet enthusiasts. “I must say that while most of the items are unique and desirable, I do wonder about the rather anomalous inclusion of a cruise at this particular point in time,” pondered one.

The seven-night Caribbean cruise for two passengers, valued at $2,500, is currently going for $750. It’s scheduled for November.

Other lots include virtual private lessons with ballet dancers and concert pianists.
