The World’s Last Male Northern White Rhino Has Died

March 20, 2018

Sudan, who was 45-years-old, was the last male northern white rhino.

He was kept at the Kenyan conservancy with two females of the same subspecies. The Ol Pejeta Conservancy revealed that Sudan’s muscles and bones had degenerated and his skin had extensive wounds.

Sudan’s condition made it difficult for him to stand up which led to the decision of euthanizing him on Monday.

Sudan was part of a conservation effort to keep the northern white rhino species alive. Though thousands of southern white rhinos are still in sub-Saharan Africa, rampant poaching of the northern white rhino species has driven them to extinction. Sudan’s genetic material was collected on Monday for the last effort at reproduction through advanced cellular technology.

There are two female species left in the conservancy: Sudan’s daughter Najin, who is 27-years-old and Najin’s daughter Fatu, who is 17-years-old.

Helping Rhinos

Last year, Sudan became somewhat of a celebrity when the conservancy partnered up with Tinder to “find him a suitable mate,” hoping to raise money to pay for a $9 million fertility treatment.

“He was a great ambassador for his species and will be remembered for the work he did to raise awareness globally of the plight facing not only rhinos, but also the many thousands of other species facing extinction as a result of unsustainable human activity,” the conservancy’s CEO, Richard Vigne, said.
