The Shape of Water Bags 4 Awards At The 2018 Oscars

March 06, 2018

The Shape of Water has won 4 awards at this year’s Oscars.

The film was directed by Guillermo del Toro who also won the award for best director. Del Toro mentioned that this film was inspired by the Creature from the Black Lagoon, which he remembered watching as a child. The Shape of Water follows the story of a mute janitor working at a secret scientific laboratory (Sally Hawkins) who falls in love with an aquatic creature (Doug Jones) being held prisoner at the lab.

Though Del Toro has been nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Not in the English Language for Pan’s Labyrinth in 2007, The Shape of Water is Del Toro’s first Oscar win. The other nominees for Best Director were Chistopher Nolan for Dunkirk, Jordan Peele for Get Out, Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird, and Paul Thomas Anderson for Phantom Thread.

Del Toro also highlighted his immigrant background in his acceptance speech by saying,  “I am an immigrant. The greatest thing art does is erase the lines in the sand, when the world tells us to make them deeper.”

Alexandre Desplat also received an Oscar for Best Original Score for the film, making this his second Oscar win. The French composer previously received an award for Best Original Score in 2014 for The Grand Budapest Hotel. This is only the fifth time in 25 years that an Oscar has been rewarded to a previous winner as voters usually pick first time nominees.

Since the two main characters in The Shape of Water were both mute, Desplat’s melodic and warm musical scoring gave the cleaning lady and the creature a voice to communicate their love story with. This is the second project that Desplat has done with Del Toro as he did the theme for the 2016 TV series “Trollhunters”.

The third Oscar award that the film received went to Paul Austerbery, Jeffrey A. Melvin, and Shane Vieau for best production design. This was the Canadian trio’s first Oscar nomination and first Oscar win. The trio also won in the same category just recently at the British Academy Film Awards.

Lastly, aside from winning the Oscar for Best Director, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design, The Shape of Water won Best Picture beating out Call Me by Your Name, Darkest Hour, Dunkirk, Get Out, Lady Bird, Phantom Thread, The Post, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri making it the most awarded film of the night.
