Here’s Why Lacoste Is Temporarily Changing Its Logo

March 06, 2018

The iconic fashion label Lacoste has not changed their logo in 85 years. But it has swapped their famous crocodile insignia for 10 endangered species to bring awareness to and fight the potential extinction of these rare animals.

The brand teamed up with the International Union for Conservation of Nature for three years to bring light to the issue and support the cause. The Lacoste x Save Our Species partnership features the simple design of the iconic green applique on their trademark white tennis shirts. All proceeds of the project will be donated for the benefit of global wildlife conservation.

There will only be 1,175 limited-edition polo shirts made to represent the endangered reptiles, mammals and birds. The number of shirts will correspond to the population sizes per animal.

These are the 10 species and the number of shirts they will be producing in total:

  • Sumatran Tiger – 350
  • California Condor – 231
  • Northern Sportive Lemur – 50
  • Saola – 250
  • Anegada Ground Iguana – 450
  • Javan Rhino – 67
  • Burmese Roofed Turtle – 40
  • Vaquita/Gulf of California Porpoise – 30
  • Kakapo Parrot – 157
  • Cao-vit Gibbon – 150

This is not the first time Lacoste has done a project to bring light to global environmental issues. For the autumn-winter 2018 collection, the label featured a clothing line with images of the world’s 10 most endangered species on the catwalk during Paris Fashion Week.

Lacoste designer Felipe Olveira Baptisa wanted to show the heritage and legacy of Rene Lacoste and his wife Simone through this project. The couple started a tree development project near their home to protect forestry workers from being sent to labor camps during the German occupation. Baptista mentioned, “This is our way of planting trees in 2018.”

The project was also slated for 2019, however with the dwindling numbers of each species, Baptista was pushed to start the project to bring global awareness to fight extinction.
