Yesterday’s biggest piece of news was that Syfy has picked up Universal and Don Mancini’s Child’s Play TV series, with “Channel Zero” creator Nick Antosca on board to produce.
“I’ve long wanted to bring Chucky to television and Syfy is the perfect network for us,” said Mancini, who will write. “The show will be a fresh take on the franchise, allowing us to explore Chucky’s character with a depth that is uniquely afforded by the television series format, while staying true to the original vision that has terrorized audiences for over three decades now.”
What makes Syfy such a perfect network for Chucky, you ask? Well, for starters, Chucky will be able to curse up a storm on Syfy! And yes, he’ll even be able to use his favorite curse word.
Antosca took to Twitter yesterday to let concerned fans know that Chucky will indeed be able to use the word “fuck” in the Syfy series, suggesting that the character won’t be toned down when he makes the transition from rated “R” movies to cable television. For the past couple years now, Syfy has allowed f-bombs, as regular viewers have probably noticed.
Buzzfeed explained last year, “Syfy declined to put an executive on the phone to discuss the change in the internal rules, but a spokesperson said that when language — “fuck” specifically — is deemed important to the style or plot of a show, Syfy and USA now allow it. Any show with “fuck” airs with the TV-MA guideline, denoting that the program is meant for adult viewers.”
Somewhere, wherever he is, Brad Dourif is smiling.
(Yes, Chucky can say “fuck” on Syfy.)
