28-year-old Gustavo Serrano Carabajal was bitten on the neck. He was cleaning out the creature’s cage when he forgot to lock the gate, and the lion managed to escape and pounce on Gustavo.

Other zoo workers found Gustavo’s body in the enclosure of the 22-year-old male lion, Kimba, at the Nicholas Bravo Zoo in Tulancingo, in the Mexican state of Hidalgo.

Gustavo was already dead when emergency services arrived.

The local councilor for Tulancingo, Fernandez Perez Romero, told reporters that the lion would not be put down.

Fernandez said the authorities would work with the zoo to reinforce safety measures when working with the animals.

It was also mentioned that 75% of the animals in the zoo were being sheltered with the Federal Attorney’s Office for Environmental Protection.

Authorities will also be helping to support the victim’s family, and the zoo is working to improve its safety standards.

Last year, another Nicholas Bravo Zoo worker’s fingers were bitten off by a chimp because it thought he was flirting with his female partner.

The same zookeeper’s ear was also bitten in a fit of rage after the female chimp tried to kiss the zookeeper. After managing to escape, the zookeeper was rushed to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery.

Gustavo’s death has sparked a discussion among officials about the violence that occurs with animals in captivity.
