Viraldice: Secretary of Energy Rick Perry Just Made a Ridiculous Claim About What Could Prevent Sexual Assault

ow do we stop sexual assault from happening? We're no social scientists, but a good guess would be education, taking sexual predators out of positions of power, believing people when they say they've been assaulted, and uh... most importantly... not assaulting people.

Curiously, some people are still wanting to scatter the blame from these atrocities literally anywhere except for on the people who've committed the crimes.

Rick Perry is one of those people. He shared some of his ideas about rape and fossil fuels yesterday, and they are so horribly bad.

Rick Perry is the United States Secretary of Energy.

You’d think the United States Secretary of energy would be knowledgeable about science, right? That’s kind of his job. Actually, its exactly his job to know about and fight for renewable energy.

Instead, Rick Perry chooses to fight for coal, which is an outdated and non-renewable energy source.

And yesterday, he said the most ridiculous and blatantly false thing connecting fossil fuel and rape prevention.

He met with "Meet the Press" host Chuck Todd yesterday and talked about his recent trip to Africa.

That’s when he implied that expanding fossil fuel use could prevent sexual assault from happening. You know what can stop sexual assault from happening? Not assaulting people and not perpetrating a culture where sexual harassment is accepted.

Rick Perry has other ideas. They are so bad, you guys. They’re so bad.

First, he said that during his trip to Africa, a young girl told him that energy was important to her. She usually reads by the light of a fire that gives off toxic fumes and would like to use electricity instead.

Then, Perry said, “But also from the standpoint of sexual assault… When the lights are on, when you have light that shines, the righteousness, if you will on those types of acts.”

Then he said that this is just one of the examples of how fossil fuels will improve people’s lives.

 

It's strange and offensive that he said that turning a light on can prevent sexual assault.

It’s also unclear why this electricity has to be powered by fossil fuels. It seems like he’s using this as a strange excuse to push his agenda.

 

People had a lot of questions about the Secretary of Energy's statement.

Does sunlight stop em? Like vampires. Only fossil fuel produced electric light or can I use batteries? What about candles...from a church?

Darren Lee suggested that candles from a church may be the answer. Perhaps silver bullets, garlic, and holy water would work just as well.
