No matter how hard you try, the void left in your life by the premature passing of a loved one can never be fully filled. We miss their presence at every major and minor juncture of our lives, especially for annual events like birthdays and anniversaries.

Many people imagine their loved ones watching over them and guiding them in the right direction. For 21-year-old Bailey Sellers, there is absolutely no question that she is being closely watched by her father, who passed away one month before her 17th birthday.

“He was my best friend in the entire world,” Sellers told Buzzfeed News about her father, Michael, who died after a battle with cancer.

Michael had always been there for his teenage daughter, even going as far as to coach her school’s basketball team for four years. Their close bond meant that Bailey “[looked] up to him,” so when he succumbed to the cancer battle he was so valiantly fighting, Bailey was devastated.

Still mourning the loss of her beloved father, Bailey used what little energy she had to celebrate her 17th birthday, totally clueless to the surprise he had arranged for her during his final days.

The teen was left completely overwhelmed when a beautiful bouquet of flowers arrived with her name on it, complete with a special message.

Initially, she presumed they’d been sent by an admirer, but as she read the card she learned they’d come from someone much closer to her heart, her late father. “I just dropped,” she recalls. “I was absolutely shocked.”
