The London Critics' Circle Film Awards 2019

You know her best from suspenseful titles like Thoroughbreds, Split, and The Witch, but Anya Taylor-Joy is about to get her Bobby Fisher on. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress will take the lead in the forthcoming Netflix mini-series The Queen’s Gambit. Godless creator Scott Frank will write, direct, and executive produce the show, in which Taylor-Joy stars as Beth Harmon, an orphaned girl growing up in the Cold War era who aims to become the best chess player in the world — truly the dream of lonely children everywhere. The story will span Beth’s life from age 8 to 22, and as if being a chess prodigy wasn’t stressful enough, she will also battle issues with addiction. Taylor-Joy is also doing voice work on Netflix’s Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, because of course she has to balance out some straight drama by playing a Gelfling rebel. The genre roots must stay strong.
