Social App ‘Bumble’ Just Banned Photos With Guns In Response To Mass Shootings
March 14, 2018
After the number of mass shootings and nationwide calls for gun control in the recent weeks, social and dating app Bumble is working to ban images that show any firearms.
With headquarters in Austin, Texas, Bumble has assigned 5,000 moderators around the world to scour the profiles of its 30 million users for any photos with guns and gun-related content.
The app’s founder, Whitney Wolfe Herd, created Bumble to be a “kinder, more accountable” online space where women can feel comfortable initiating conversations.
Many have even dubbed Bumble as the ‘feminist dating app.’
“We just want to create a community where people feel at ease, where they do not feel threatened, and we just don’t see guns fitting into that equation,” said Whitney.
Whitney also acknowledged that she understands some gun owners consider themselves as hobbyists and do not endorse violence. She said that users, such as competitive sport shooters, could appeal to have their photos restored.
Even though gun photos will no longer be allowed on a user’s profile, Bumble will not be able to censor images that appear through Instagram integration.
Whitney also plans to eventually filter out any mention of guns in written content as well.
“This is not a politically driven decision, nor a decision driven by hatred of people’s personal beliefs or choices,” she said. “Not everyone’s going to love us for it, but it’s the right thing to do.”
