As Goose the cat would likely say in gratitude: Meow. Captain Marvel, the newest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that revolves around Brie Larson’s titular superhero in the grungy ‘90s, has flown away with the seventh biggest opening in the franchise’s history. THR reports the film earned an estimated $153 million for its debut weekend in America and Canada, with an estimated $455 million global debut in total — solidifying its status as the biggest-ever opening for a female-fronted film. For comparison, the other superhero film with a female lead, 2017’s Wonder Woman, brought in $103 million in America and Canada during its inaugural weekend. (And since we know you’re curious, the three Avengers films, Black Panther, Captain America: Civil War and Iron Man 3 were Marvel’s top six films.) Reviews have been pretty mixed, although the Annette Bening community will be pleased.
