It was supposed to take place on June 12 in Singapore. However, Trump called off the meeting due to alleged North Korean hostility. He also mentioned that the US military was ready to respond should there be a need for it in the wake of the cancellation.
“I’ve spoken to (Defense Secretary) General Mattis and the Joint Chiefs of Staff and our military, which is by far the most powerful anywhere in the world that has been greatly enhanced recently, as you all know, is ready if necessary,” Trump said.
Trump also mentioned that US allies Japan, and South Korea are ready to take action if the North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un decides to commit a “reckless or foolish act.”

In a letter addressed to the North Korean leader released by the White House, the US president said that North Korea’s “tremendous anger and open hostility” was the cause of the summit not pushing through.
“I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting,” he wrote.
“Therefore, please let this letter serve to represent that the Singapore summit, for the good of both parties, but to the detriment of the world, will not take place. You talk about you nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never be used,” the president added.
The above statement was made by Trump after Kim reportedly called Vice President Mike Pence “ignorant,” and “stupid,” and warned of a “nuclear showdown” between the two countries.

Kim’s remark was also a response to Vice President Mike Pence’s comments that North Korea could be the next Libya, where their leader, Muammar Qaddafi, was killed and soon thereafter the country fell into chaos.
A senior White House official also said that under the circumstances, the summit would have never been able to work.
Amidst the cancellation of the summit, North Korea says that their leader is still willing to meet the US president “at any time and in any way”.
Kim Kye Gwan, who is a top official at North Korea’s Foreign Ministry, said, “We reiterate to the US that we are willing to sit face to face at any time and in any way. I would like to conclude that President Trump’s statement on the North Korea-US summit is a decision that is not in line with the wishes of the who hope for the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula as well as the world.”
