May 07, 2018

A brave mother in Houston saw that a teenage girl was being abducted, so she sprung to action.

Cecilia Ruiz was bringing her daughter to school when she noticed that a young girl was being forced into a pickup truck by a man who was intoxicated.

The man grabbed 17-year-old Ana Olmedo and tried to bring her into his vehicle, but Cecilia yelled for the teenager to get inside her car instead.

The drunk man tried to get away, but Cecilia was right behind him. A high-speed chase ensued and Cecilia told her daughter to call the police.

As the drunk man was trying to evade Cecilia, he drove himself into a ditch. Cecilia then waited, along with some neighbors, for the police to arrive.

Cecilia shared with Fox that she had no fear while chasing after the man, that “at that moment I know who put me there, and I was put there for a reason, a good reason.”

The man was later identified as 34-year-old Daniel Zapata.

Zapata was arrested and charged with aggravated attempted kidnapping, and driving under the influence. The suspect had previous records of DUI and robbery according to court records.

Cecilia was honored by Safe Walk Home, a program in their community that aims to ensure student safety as they go home from school.

As she was recognized by the organization, she said, “At that moment I know who put me there, and and I was put there for a reason, a good reason.”

The organization was created after the death of 11-year-old Josue Flores who was killed while walking home from school. Even until now, the killer is still at large but the community is doing its best to train more people like Cecilia in the Safe Walk Home program.
